Most home gyms fail on paper, before anyone buys anything. The rack fits the wall, but the 220 cm barbell does not clear the doorway. The treadmill fits the alcove, and there is nowhere to step off the back of it. The ceiling is 2.3 m and the first overhead press leaves a knuckle print on the plasterboard.
All of that is arithmetic. Almost nobody publishes the arithmetic.
A workable home gym starts around 6 m2 (65 sq ft). Allow 2.0 x 2.0 m of clear floor for mat and bodyweight work, 4 to 5 m2 for a rack and bench, 1.2 x 3 m for a rower, and about 4 m of length for a treadmill once you add the run-off behind it. Check ceiling height before anything else: overhead work needs roughly 2.4 m.
What each activity actually needs
The equipment footprint is the small number. The space you need around it is the large one.

Those numbers do not simply add up, and that is the trick in a small room. Mat zone and bench zone can share one patch of floor if the bench parks on its end. The rack zone cannot share with anything, because a loaded barbell is not something you shove aside for a stretch. So the question is not how many machines fit; it is how many square metres stay permanently claimed.
Ceiling height decides more than the floor
Measure floor to the lowest obstruction: the underside of the light fitting, the beam, or in a garage the door track rather than the apex above it.
- Overhead barbell press. Someone 180 cm tall locks a bar out at roughly 215 to 225 cm. Add 10 cm so you are not grazing paint: 2.35 m minimum, 2.4 m sensible.
- Skipping. The rope passes 30 to 50 cm above the head, so 2.3 to 2.5 m.
- Pull-up bar. Chin over the bar puts your crown 25 to 30 cm above it. A doorway bar at 205 cm is fine under a 2.4 m ceiling; a rack-mounted bar at 220 cm wants 2.5 m.
- Treadmill. The deck sits 15 to 25 cm off the floor, so subtract that before comparing with your height.
Under 2.3 m, design around it instead of pretending. A basement, or a garage under a sectional door mechanism, often leaves 2.1 to 2.2 m. Just do not buy a 218 cm rack for a 220 cm room.
The flooring stack, layer by layer
- Work out what is underneath. Concrete slab, screed floating on insulation, or timber joists. Knock it: a hollow, drummy sound means something flexes.
- Over a concrete slab. One layer, 15 to 20 mm rubber tile or roll. Rubber weighs roughly 22 kg per m2 at 20 mm, so 6 m2 is about 130 kg before any equipment.
- Over laminate on joists. Two layers: 6 mm rubber roll across the zone, then 15 to 20 mm tile on the loaded part only.
- Under a rack, never foam. A 40 mm EVA tile compresses under a rack foot and the frame rocks. Put an 18 mm plywood sheet, 120 x 240 cm, under the feet to spread the point load, rubber over it.
- A platform, if you want one, is two layers of 18 mm ply plus a 20 mm rubber top: 56 mm of build-up.
- Check the door. Internal doors clear the floor by 10 to 15 mm. A 20 mm mat already fouls that.
Floor load, and the neighbour problem
Residential floors in Europe are designed for an imposed load around 1.5 to 2.0 kN/m2 — roughly 150 to 200 kg per square metre spread out, with a safety margin above that. A rack, 200 kg of plates and a person over 2 m2 comes to about 125 kg/m2, so in a concrete-slab flat you are usually fine statically. Put the heavy corner near a wall rather than mid-span, because that is where a floor carries load best.
Static weight is not what breaks things. Dropping a loaded bar produces a very short, very large impact spike, and that is what cracks screed, lifts tiles and turns the flat below into a demolition site. Rubber protects your plates and your floor finish; against structure-borne noise, which goes into the slab and reappears two floors down, it does close to nothing.
So do not drop weights in a flat. Not onto rubber, not onto a platform. Lower the bar instead. Timing matters even without drops: a treadmill motor, a rower chain and any jumping all travel through structure, so train early evening rather than at 06:00.
Mirrors, air, and where the fan goes
120 cm is the narrowest mirror that shows both shoulders; less shows you half of yourself and is worse than none. A 120 x 180 cm panel with its bottom edge 25 to 35 cm off the floor covers a standing figure and the bottom of a squat. Bolt it to the wall, and leave 60 cm between the glass and anything a barbell can swing into.
One person training in a closed 10 m2 room raises temperature and humidity noticeably within minutes, so open a window before you start rather than after. A wall-mounted fan at about 2 m keeps the floor clear; a pedestal fan belongs in the corner diagonally opposite the door, aimed across your body rather than at your back. In a basement, a dehumidifier holding 55 to 60% relative humidity does more than any fan. Aim for 300 to 500 lux at floor level.
Three versions that actually fit
The spare room, 9 to 12 m2. The long wall takes the rack, which needs 2.8 m of clear run for the bar. The bench parks on its end, 40 x 130 cm. The centre stays empty as a 2 x 2 m mat zone, and cardio goes in a corner or not at all. If the room is also a guest room or an office, treat it like a guest room and office combo and decide which function is the tenant: usually the gym, used four times a week against a guest bed used four times a year.
The garage or basement. The best floor you will ever have and the worst ceiling. Concrete takes rubber directly. Measure under the door track, insulate if you will use it in January, dehumidify below ground, add real task lighting. Watch storage creep, which is what actually kills garage gyms: the week the bikes and paint tins come back in, the training space is gone. Mark the zone out with the rubber. The bedroom corner that disappears. 1.6 x 1.2 m, about 2 m2. One pair of adjustable dumbbells replaces roughly ten fixed pairs inside 60 x 40 cm. A mat rolled behind the door, a doorway pull-up bar, and either a wall-mounted folding rack, 12 to 15 cm deep when folded, or no rack at all. A rug over the rubber hides the zone when guests come. Same discipline as the two-square-metre office; if the room already does three jobs, zoning one small room is the more useful read, and finding the 2 m2 is usually a dead space question.
What to buy first when the budget is small
In order, for space reasons rather than training ones: flooring (6 m2 of rubber, cheaper than most machines, and it defines where everything else can go), adjustable dumbbells (the most capability per square metre you can buy), an adjustable bench (stands on end, 40 x 130 cm parked), a pull-up bar or rings (zero permanent floor), a rack (last, because it claims 4 to 5 m2 for good), then cardio, once you know which 4 m of length it will eat.
The two purchases most often made first and regretted: a folding treadmill, which gets folded exactly once, and a multi-gym, which permanently occupies about 3 m2.
What this maths cannot fix
It cannot tell you what your floor is made of, so in an older building with timber joists, ask before you put 300 kg in one spot. It cannot make a 2.2 m ceiling work for overhead barbell work. It cannot buy quiet: if your building is noise-sensitive, that constraint shapes what the room can be.
